A Wonderful Testimonial About RKS

January 15, 2012

To All Family, Friends, Students, and Instructors

My sister Antoinette is a student at Robinson Karate School in Newmarket Ontario. She has been a part of the school for the past four years. Antoinette is a special young girl. She was born prematurely and because of this she has both developmental and learning disabilities. Antoinette suffers from Myopia Astigmatism and ADHD, which impairs her gross and fine motor movements as well as her attention and learning. Although Antoinette is faced with these challenges daily, she excels in her social, physical, and scholastic worlds. The environment that Robinson Karate School creates has helped facilitate these successes for Antoinette, particularly in her motor skills and social confidence.

There is a noticeable difference in how well coordinated Antoinette is now compared to four years ago. For example, because of her vision impairments Antoinette has much difficultly going down the stairs, but after four years of Karate lessons she can do hand-leg kicks in sequence and summersaults. This is a huge milestone for a young girl who has the visual impairments she does.

The instructors at Robinson Karate School are highly trained, kind, and patient individuals. They have the ability to take complex karate routines and skills, break them down into terms that both children with and without learning disabilities can understand, learn, and enjoy. I think it takes a very special group of individuals to be able to do this, especially when faced with a room of 20 or more screaming kids with all very different and unique learning styles. Antoinette is now a blue belt in Karate. She is more confident, stronger, and overall happier. For a child who has faced and will face many challenges in different areas of her life, she has accomplished much as a 10 year old. I believe that the exceptional and compassionate environment that the instructors at Robinson Karate School craft was vital in helping Antoinette accomplish these monumental achievements.

Thank You Robinson Karate School–you have helped my sister Antoinette’s motor development, social skill development, and just made her a happy and tough little girl!

Sincerely,

Gracie Jiu-Jitsu as Remedy for Bullying

September 8, 2011

We found this great article online regarding bullying:

Martin Hendricks, 12, spent a week this summer at the Gracie Academy in Torrance, Calif., in an intensive program designed to make him “Bullyproof.” He learned as many jiu-jitsu self-defense techniques as a kid can absorb in five days, he memorized a blueprint for dealing with a bully fairly and squarely, and he gained self-confidence. The first week of school he put the lessons into practice. Read the rest of the article….

Top 10 Reasons to Train in the Martial Arts

September 8, 2011

We found this great article online and thought we’d share…

Top Ten Reasons to Take Karate:

1. A lifestyle characterised by lack of physical activity and excessive inactivity (particularly television viewing and video games) can cause obesity in children.

2. Women, who are involved in one or more sports, have been found to be more successful in their workplace and life in general.

3. Participating in an activity such as karate as a family enhances the quality of family life.

4. Karate promotes camaraderie and compassion by providing a supportive and nurturing environment. The quality of interpersonal relationships between adults and youths within the caring climate, influences youths’ to optimize social behaviour while simultaneously curtailing antisocial behaviour.

5. Long-term sports participation helps alleviate anxiety related and social problems. Results show that the more formal sports participation and the longer the participation, the lower the scores on Externalizing Problems, Social Problems, Aggression Problems, and Delinquency Problems.

6. Karate can help children in developing a strong moral code. Children and youth need to develop their own moral code so they will consciously choose to behave ethically.

7. Cardiovascular fitness and Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) are closely related to abdominal obesity. Present studies demonstrate that cardiovascular fitness and abdominal obesity each are independently and strongly associated with individual CVD risk factors.

8. There are about 71 percent of students that report bullying as an on-going problem. Karate promotes the development of confidence in children and an improved ability to deal with bullying situations.

9. Women have been found to enjoy physical exercise for both stress management and social activity. They may also be particularly receptive to capitalizing on the stress and anxiety reducing benefits of a particular exercise session, and to fostering social relationships while exercising.

10. One major reason women take self defence, is to combat the fear of violence in the world. The fear of violence, often transmitted through second-hand experiences and stories, was a major motivator for many women.
